Instructions on how to use and complete the weekly reading fluency passages:
Beginning the first full week of school, students will bring home a reading fluency packet.
This packet includes pages with the following titles:
1. Weekly Home Reading Fluency Log
2. Student copy of reading passage. (There are no numbers along the side of the page. Do not return.)
3. Parent copy of reading passage with numbers on the side to help keep track of how many Words Per Minute (WPM) your student has read.
5. Question page. Students should answer each question, using complete sentences.
On Friday, please help your student remember to return the following three pages:
A. Completed question page.
B. Completed Weekly Home Reading Fluency Log
C. Completed Parent copy of reading passage
Find a quiet place where you can listen to your student read. You will also need a way to time 1 minute.
1.) Ask your student to begin reading the passage out loud. (You begin the 1 minute timer.)
2.) Have your student read for 1 minute.
3.) Note the last word they read when the minute is up.
4.) Count how many words your child read in that minute. WPM. (Use the numbers along the side of the page to help you calculate.)
5.) Record that number in the box at the bottom of the parent copy of the passage.
Your student's WPM should increase from the first reading to the last and your child should make less mistakes.
